10 Tips on What to Wear For Your Engagement Session

Your engagement or anniversary session is a time to snuggle up, get to know your photographer, fall more in love with your honey, and have fun! But figuring out all the logistics can stress you out. I’m in the middle of planning our 10th Anniversary Session and planning what to wear is definitely stressing me out! Wanting to look good, feel comfortable, and have outfits that look good together and photograph well puts pressure on people to feel like they have to have just the right clothes.
But in the end, we all overthink it all too much sometimes. Today I’m sharing a few tips for what to wear for your engagement session to help calm the stress and help you feel relaxed for your photos!
1. Coordinate, don’t match!
The days of perfectly matching are gone. Color palates or shades of a color are the way to go! Having coordinating outfits gives some visual variety to the images and helps the eye naturally flow over the image and not get stuck trying to tell people apart.

2. Patterns are ok!

There’s the idea going around that you need solid colors for photos. Not necessarily! While I don’t suggest big graphic tees, adding in a pattern to your outfit can give a fun pop and add personality. You don’t want to be covered in patterns from head to toe, but having a bit in there is perfect! If you do have a pattern though, still try to pull at least one color from it and use it elsewhere in the outfits (as with the red being pulled from the guys’ plaids in the outfits below and worn by the girls). And guys, try to have the pattern on your shirts be larger than a nickel or the pattern starts to show up a little wonky on the screen.

3. Contrasting Colors

If you’re looking for a way to add some POP to your photo, try contrasting colors or values! Having a dark and a light, or opposite colors on the color wheel can really make the colors seem more vibrant and prominent in the photos.

4. Dress up!

These sessions are a great excuse to get all dolled up! I highly recommend having at least one of your outfits being dressy. Having a casual outfit and a dressy out fit can give your shoot 2 completely different looks! You never regret doing dressy shots!

5. Don’t be afraid to be BOLD!

Accessories or fun pieces can really show some personality in a photo! Throw in that great chunky necklace, metallic pants, or bright shoes if that fits you!

6. Keep your location in mind!

Dressing to coordinate with your location can give your photos a cohesive and refined look! Earthy tones for a forest shoot. Blue if you have epic mountains in the back. Something trendy and bright for a downtown look. Something sleek and elegant for the uptown feel.

7. Make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, and that you like it.

If you don’t like the way you look in an outfit before photos, you won’t like the way you look in the photos. Wear something that you feel good in. And wear something that you feel like you in! If you feel awkward and uncomfortable, it shows! If you feel confident and comfortable in what you are wearing, that puts you more at ease for the shoot and you’ll like how the photos turn out much better!

8. Empty your pockets (especially the guys!)

It makes sitting poses easier (so you don’t get stabbed in the leg by your keys), and so there aren’t any, ahem…bulges anywhere. You don’t want wallets or phones stealing the show!

9. Girls, don’t be afraid of heels!
Heels give your foot a more feminine shape, and come on…we all know they make legs look great!
10. Just relax and have fun!
I’ll help you every step of the way, you don’t have to be a pro at this. I always tell my couples, there’s nothing you can do to mess up the shoot. Just enjoy this time together, have fun!
