The Great Decrapitate of 2018

In 2015 we went through a HUGE decluttering job as we prepared to move from a large 3 bedroom house to a one bedroom house. It was our first major Decrapitation. It was INSANE the amount of stuff we’d clung onto and collected through the years. I was embarrassed by the amount of stuff we had!

Each year since we’ve worked to decrapitate because never again do we want to let our stuff rule us like it did then. Spring is always my favorite time. I’m ready to shake off the dust of winter, jump into new life, and I’m ready to get rid of things I clung to in the cold and dark. And this next week I start Round 4: The Great Decrapitate of 2018. Oh how my nerdy heart wants that to rhyme!

As I’ve prepped and talked about this process, I’ve had many express interest in joining in and getting help and ideas through this, so I’ve been working to create a group and template for anyone who wants to join in the decrapitate movement this Spring! (I’ll link to those in just a minute).

I’ve created a template list divided up into rooms, and then into common problem areas in each room. I know everyone’s life and house is different. Some won’t have kid’s rooms to worry about. Others may have extra hot spots in rooms than what I have listed. This list isn’t meant to be the “be all, end all”, but more a foundation to get you started and to save you some time (we all like that part, right?!). I have three different ways to access the list:

Trello Board (my favorite!!).
Trello is a free organization app that I LOVE. I’ve got the board ready and set up for you (just read the “How This Works” part first to copy the board over so you don’t adjust the original template).
Trello Decrapitate
Word Document
Because most of us all love Word and it’s easy!

Google Document
Word doesn’t work for everyone, so this makes it easy to access!

My Method to Decrapitate

I like to approach this in a bite sized chunk method, adapted from the 40 Bags in 40 Days method. I take my list and do just one or two spaces a day, clearing out at least one grocery bag worth of stuff each day for a month. Already pretty slimmed down? Say 2 items per space. Have lots of space? Go with a kitchen trash bag! It doesn’t matter the size, but give yourself a goal to work towards.

I start my official decrapitation on Monday the 26th, but you can start earlier or later!

Need Motivation, Ideas, and like doing projects with others?

I created a Facebook Group for anyone interested who’s working on this! It’s especially a fun and 100% judgmental free place to post up before and after photos of the places you’ve decrapitated! Join the group here!

Oh boy, my house needs this so badly. Doesn’t seem so overwhelming just doing one or two small things at a time. Thanks so sharing this!
