Let me tell you, Robert had this Mogollon Rim Proposal planned out so perfectly. Everything ran like clockwork! When he emailed me about photographing the proposal I had a very narrow window on the date available, and he was so amazing to work in that time frame so that I could be there to capture this amazing event. And the best part…Laura had no idea!
My friend Mikaela and her sweet little girl met me up on the Mogollon Rim to come hang out and act as decoys (best friend ever to drive all that way “just” to decoy). I loved capturing some Mommy and me photos for her (those will come later!) while we waited. Every car that pulled in we’d try to surreptitiously watch to see if it was them. Is it that Jeep? Does that count as a black Jeep? That’s a dark navy Jeep…is that them? Nope. And my stomach would tie up in an excited little knot!
Finally The Black Jeep pulled up and Robert and Laura hopped out. I’d never met them before but Robert had sent over some photos of them so I’d be sure to be able to pick them out. I kept on shooting photos of Mikaela all while keeping my eye on the sweethearts. Robert and I made I contact to connect and let each other know we were both ready.
The spot we’d picked out originally was full of tourists that had come just before Robert and Laura so we hadn’t had time to clear them out, but Robert improvised perfectly and they walked down the path just a little farther until they had a spot more to themselves.
Trying to be “sneaky” and get into the right position for the new spot instead of the old, we moved over “for better light” for Mikaela and while my camera was pointed in the opposite direction, I kept a close eye on Robert waiting for the cue.
They were so cute. Walking along hand in hand. And he didn’t look nervous AT ALL! Suddenly I saw the cue…he had her look out over the Rim so that he could take a picture of her. At that moment a young couple started walking on the Rim towards them and I was so grateful Mikaela was able to grab their attention and divert them before they got too far in! While Laura was turned away for the photo op, Robert pulled out the ring, got on one knee, and had her turn around “for another photo”.
I loved watching her face…a slight moment of confusion as he wasn’t where she had expected him, and then the emotion hit and the moment was so tender! I couldn’t stop shooting but at the same time felt like I was intruding on such a special moment. They were absolutely adorable!
After some time of hugging, laughing, talking, and the sweetest kisses, Robert turned her and pointed me out and she grinned again. I LOVED getting to be the first one to congratulate them and give them hugs! It was one of the sweetest things I’ve watched! “I’m sure you knew something was up.” He said to her. “No! Not a thing!” He pulled it off! Perfectly!!
Before they headed back down the mountain, so he could give her another surprise with an engagement party filled with friends and family, we snapped their first portraits as an engaged couple! They were so natural, fun, snuggly, and I just loved it!
Robert and Laura, I’m so excited for you and for your life together! Thank you so much for inviting me into such a tender and private moment. It touched my heart in the sweetest way!
